Use illustrations and prior knowledge to make meaning
Reread parts of the story that don't make sense
Retell the story in your own words
Locate the main ideas and details
Use knowledge of language patterns and phonics to decode words
Identify familiar and “sight” words
Ensure that your child is monitoring as they read (asking themselves: Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense?)
Self-correct errors consistently using three cueing systems: meaning, structure, and visual
Encourage your child to say the starting sound of a word
