Reading Strategies

  • Use illustrations and prior knowledge to make meaning
  • Reread parts of the story that don't make sense
  • Retell the story in your own words
  • ​Locate the main ideas and details
  • Use knowledge of language patterns and phonics to decode words
  • ​Identify familiar and “sight” words
  • Ensure that your child is monitoring as they read (asking themselves: Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense?)
  • Self-correct errors consistently using three cueing systems: meaning, structure, and visual
  • Encourage your child to say the starting sound of a word
